If moving from ESXi 7 to 8, check your new key entitlements in the Broadcom Support Portal. Navigate to the host in the inventory
If you see “Invalid license key” , the key is either for the wrong product (e.g., vCenter key on ESXi) or is already used on another host (if not a free edition).
According to VMware KB 408845, the license key itself is corrupt. Although the key decodes properly and seems valid on the surface, it cannot be applied due to internal corruption within the license string.
