Pier Paolo Pasolini was an acclaimed poet, novelist, and filmmaker. Salò was his final film, released just three weeks after his brutal murder in 1975. The film is a radical departure from his earlier “Trilogy of Life” ( The Decameron, The Canterbury Tales, Arabian Nights ), which celebrated the body. Pasolini grew disillusioned with the sexual revolution, viewing it as co-opted by consumerist power and bourgeois rationalism. He intended Salò to be a ferocious dismissal of this false liberation, arguing it had been “superseded and cancelled out by the decision of consumerist power”. The film is, in his words, a cry against violence and Fascism, and a demonstration of the anarchy of all power.
