Contemporary artists have explored similar territory. A painting titled simply Gaia declares that “Food is the real economy. Food is the primary influence behind everything we do and everything we affect”. If food is the primary influence, then the arts that celebrate and ritualize food—music, dance, poetry—are part of that same economy. To compose music for Gaia is to acknowledge that nourishment takes many forms, and that the spirit, too, must be fed.
Imagine a 4K video rendered entirely in a 16-bit color palette. The visual center is a CGI stomach—translucent, veined, and nestled in a root system. Into this stomach, a conveyor belt slowly deposits objects: a crushed soda can, a deleted tweet (rendered as a glowing rune), a single grain of rice, a MIDI file of a funeral dirge. The stomach never closes. It simply absorbs. FEEDING GAIA -v1- -Casey Kane-
Moreover, feeding Gaia requires a deeper understanding of the intricate relationships between human and natural systems. Indigenous cultures have long recognized the interconnectedness of all living beings, often embodying a more harmonious and reciprocal relationship with the natural world. By embracing indigenous perspectives and knowledge, we can gain valuable insights into how to live in greater balance with the planet and its ecosystems.
