The Lambada is a dance and musical genre that originated in the state of Pará, Brazil, in the 1970s. It was a fusion of various musical styles, drawing heavily on the rhythms of Carimbó and Guitarrada, with influences from Merengue and Cumbia. The dance gained the "forbidden" moniker because its intense sensuality was considered provocative and obscene by the conservative society of the time. Danced with partners gliding in sync, the rapid footwork and hip movements of the Lambada were considered shocking, leading to it being banned in some parts of Brazil.
The Lambada originated in northern Brazil, blending elements of Forró, Carimbó, Maxixe, and Salsa. By the late 1980s, the dance reached Europe, sparked by the French pop group Kaoma and their chart-topping 1989 hit single "Lambada." The music video showcased partners dancing in close, sensual proximity, with rapid thigh-to-thigh contact and dramatic dips.
