The plot kicks off with a flashback to Antarctica, where a young Skipper, Kowalski, and Rico rescue a lone egg from a pack of hungry leopard seals. This egg eventually hatches into Private, the youngest and most innocent member of the team. Years later, after the events of Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted , the penguins find themselves entangled in a sinister plot masterminded by a new villain, Dr. Octavius Brine. While Dr. Brine appears to be an eccentric human scientist, he is in reality a disgruntled octopus named Dave (voiced by John Malkovich), who harbors a deep-seated grudge against penguins everywhere for stealing his spotlight at zoos and marine parks. His plan is to use a powerful "serum" to turn all penguins into hideous, monstrous versions of themselves.
