Several years after the Kaiju War, Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), the rebellious son of the legendary hero Stacker Pentecost, survives by stealing and selling Jaeger parts on the black market. When he is arrested with a Jaeger-obsessed hacker, Amara (Cailee Spaeny), Jake's adoptive sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), gives him a choice: enlist in the Pan Pacific Defense Corps or go to prison. Returning as an instructor, Jake is forced to confront his past and lead a new team of cadets, including his estranged co-pilot, Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood), to save the world.
