The legendary filmmaker Aravindan’s Thambu explores the absurdity of a feudal king trying to maintain rituals in a modern republic, but the most iconic exploration is Manichitrathazhu (The Ornate Lock). On the surface, it is a horror-comedy about a dancer possessed by a ghost. Beneath it, Manichitrathazhu is a tragic scream from the matrilineal past. The ghost, Nagavalli, is a woman denied her love and land within the rigid structures of the tharavadu .
